A lot of things have changed in 25 years.
But for one Roanoke family, the steady constant has been their desire to find a killer.
Doug Trout is a dutiful dad.
He visits his daughter Shannon as often as he can.
But, instead of a home filled with kids and laughter, Trout must go to a Roanoke cemetery to see his only daughter.
While, this might be Shannon's final resting place, the last two decades have been anything but restful for her family.
"She was a beautiful young girl. She had to have everything her way or no way," said Doug Trout, Shannon Hughes' dad.
That headstrong girl got married just before her 18th birthday.
Her husband, Scott, was just 20.
The newlyweds were found dead in March 1988.
But this story starts months earlier during the 4th of July weekend.
Her mother contacted me on Tuesday when she got back from Myrtle Beach, she hadn't heard from her, I hadn't heard from her," Doug Trout said.
Investigators say the couple had been at a party in the New River Valley.
Their ride left them stranded.
Eventually, they made their way to an area near the Waffle House, off of I-81 Exit 118 in Christiansburg.
"They made phone calls from that phone, trying to get someone to come and get them up until 3:53, and that's when those phone calls stopped at 3:53," Trout said.
Investigators believe the couple managed to hitch a ride to Roanoke.
But, they never made it home.
Their remains were found at the bottom of a ravine off of I-581, not too far from Interstate 81.
