A collection agency forNew River Radiology mistakenly sent out 9,000 letters to its patients.
New River Radiology is a part of Carilion Clinic.
According to a statement on Carilion Clinic's website, an old disk that had a list of uncollected accounts on it was accidentally used by Carilion's collection agency.
Carilion says it believes many of the accounts were paid, and are not overdue.
Here is the statement on Carilion Clinic's website:
In early 2009, a private radiology practice, New River Valley Radiology, joined Carilion Clinic. This week an old disk containing a list of uncollected accounts from that time period was mistakenly used by our collection agency.
About 9,000 letters were distributed. We believe many of the accounts had already been paid and were not overdue. All of the accounts are on hold and there will be no collection activity while we sort things out. We are very sorry for the error and will be sending a letter to all patients involved with an explanation and apology.
Information regarding these accounts has NOT be communicated to the various credit reporting agencies. The incorrect notices should not affect your credit report
Angela Mickle received one of those letters on Friday.
"I was really concerned," says Mickle.
She visited the radiology office in 2010 and paid her bill. Mickle worries the old bill could affect her credit report. She was told by Carilion that a letter explaining the error will be mailed and she should receive it in about a week.
She hopes Carilion takes action to prevent another mistake.
"I know they've apologized but I definitely want to know what they're gonna do to make sure this doesn't happen again," says Mickle.
