Congressman Bob Goodlatte made national news on Tuesday for a comment he made as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
This is his first year in the top spot and any changes to immigration laws will have to go through him.
He raised eyebrows by implying that a path to citizenship is an extreme option.
"I wanna give you the opportunity to answer the question of the day and that is this: Are there options to consider between the extremes of mass deportation and a pathway to citizenship for those not here legally in the United States," said Goodlatte.
The Senate has already proposed allowing the millions of immigrants here illegally to become citizens if they pay back taxes, fines and pass background checks.
In other interviews, Goodlatte has said a path to citizenship can be done, but there are many questions ahead.
He hopes to have a plan done this year.
