The Danville Area Humane Society is calling it one of the worst cases of animal cruelty it has ever seen.
A Jack Russell Terrier found barely alive with stab wounds and bites.

One thing has been on the mind of his owner, Candice Brening.

"I want to say whoever did this I want justice to be done," Brening said fighting back tears.

A cracker partially eaten and an empty cage are painful reminders for Candice Brening.

"It's not the same anymore. And I always go in the living room and see him laying on the couch. He's not there. And it's so hard to imagine him not being there," Brening said.

It was also hard to imagine the shape her dog, Dakota, was in when he returned from playing.

"His skin was ripped off on his back and it was cut in a even spot. And it was a small thin piece of layer of skin. You could see his veins, his muscles, everything. I was thinking, there's no way an animal could have done that," Brening said.

Brening says Dakota was in shock and in pain.

The last pictures she took are so graphic we couldn't show them on television or post to our website.

According to the Humane Society he suffered from bite and serious knife wounds.

"He was the best dog I've ever had. I've had him since my very first surgery I believe when I was eight years old. And I was confined to a cast and everything and I couldn't walk so I wanted a small dog to be beside me so I could have something to play with," Brening said.

Friday investigators worked to find clues in her neighborhood.

The Humane Society is offering three thousand dollars to anyone with information that can lead to an arrest.

"It's so different without my dog," Brening said.
