A fire that killed a Salem man Saturday night was started by a discarded cigarette, according to the Salem Fire Marshal’s Office.
Walter Woodyard, 61, died in the fire that broke out at 1612 Roanoke Boulevard.
Woodyard was found in his bed.
The fire caused $50,000 in damage.

We now know the name of a man who died in a Salem house fire.
It happened Saturday night at 1612 Roanoke Boulevard, just before 9:39 p.m.
Police say 61-year-old Walter Woodyard was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Salem Fire Marshal has determined the fire was accidental in nature, but it remains under investigation.
The first units arrived within four minutes of receiving the call and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the house.
Crews were able to contain the fire to one room in the home where the victim was found
during the search and rescue operations.

The investigation continues into a deadly fire in Salem.
It happened last night just after 9:30 p.m. on Roanoke Boulevard near East Salem Elementary School. According to investigators, a passerby saw the fire and called 911.
When crews got inside the house, they located a victim. That person was pronounced dead a short time later.
At this point, there's no word on the person's identity.
