The Franklin County sheriff's office is trying to figure out why a man tried to shoot two Ferrum College police officers.

Leland John Wilson is charged with two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.  Investigators say Wilson fired shots at two officers outside his home on Kermit Hollow Lane, near Ferrum.

The officers were the first to respond to a call about a domestic assault at Wilson's home around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators say Wilson ran off to an area near Beech Mountain Road.  They say family members kept him on his cell phone until deputies and state police could find him.  Wilson gave up after what the sheriff calls a brief armed encounter at around 2 a.m. Friday.  No one was hurt.

The Sheriff's department says a man shot at Ferrum College police officers after a domestic assault call on Kermit Hollow Lane around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ferrum College officers were the first to respond.  The sheriff's office says Leland John Wilson shot at them several times with an assault rifle.

The officers say he ran off to an area near Beech Mountain Road.  Deputies say family members called him and kept him on the phone.  They kept him talking until deputies and state police could find him.

The man gave up to Franklin County deputies and Virginia State Police after what they call a brief armed encounter around 2:00 a.m. Friday.  Wilson is now in the Franklin County Jail.    

He is charged with two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. No one was hurt.
