The holiday shopping season has begun.
"What are you doing out here today?"
"Buying a t.v.," says shopper Dan Schmidt.
Big ticket items are a splurge, but its the smaller electronics that are a must-have.
Explains Lexington shopper Justin Botkin, "She wanted a smartphone, so I figured I give her one right before."
And, she's not alone.
"Mobile devices, smart phones, iPads, tablet PCs, that's really, really high on the list this year," explains Best Buy's Pete Capuano.
Capuano says each holiday season there's a new toy with new bells and whistles.
Especially, since today's phones have bigger screens with higher resolutions and are thinner than ever before.
Say Capuano, "Not only is it more convenient and portable for you, but the power of those devices, they're not really phones anymore they're little computers."
That can even help with day to day tasks.
Explains Lexington shopper Tiffany Carter, "Lay the phone next to him and it would play baby music and he's out. So it's big helpful."
Another one of the most popular items this year is the tablet. Last year at this time, there were only 2-3 to choose from, this year there are more than 60.
"It's exploded, shot through the roof," says Capuano. "It's growing exponentially right now."
And with tablet prices ranging from 200 to 800 dollars, there seems to be something for every shopper.
Says Capuano, "This is an area that's not going to slowdown, because ultimately portability without losing functionality its really great blending all worlds."
