The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is sponsoring a Hazmat exercise in Roanoke on September 12th 13th and 14th.
The participants are the Environmental Protection Agency, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Roanoke Office of Emergency Management, Regional Hazmat Team, Roanoke City Police Department, Roanoke City Fire and EMS, Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Virginia Department of Health Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Red Cross and Carilion Clinic.
Crews will play out a variety of hazmat scenarios in a warehouse or outdoors near Industrial Park and 9th Street in Roanoke.
In order to assess the effectiveness of each exercise, teams will not be informed of the scenarios prior to each activity.
Each agency will have specific roles in the scenarios.
There will be no hazard to public safety or chemicals used during this exercise.
The training is important for each agency because it will provide an opportunity for each of them to work together. It enables inter agency relationships to be built, mutual understanding for each other's capabilities and ultimately allows for a better prepared response community.
