UPDATE: Martinsville Speedway president on plane that crashed in Henry County

A plane crashed at the Blue Ridge Regional Airport in Henry County early Sunday morning.

On that plane was the president of the Martinsville Speedway, Clay Campbell.

Campbell was one of seven people on the beachcraft.

No injuries were reported.


The group was coming back from a race in Ohio.

The airplane tried to land sometime around midnight, and that's when the trouble began.

The airport manager says it appears that either the landing gear was not working, or it was pilot error.

"It didn't take long to figure out what the problem was," Campbell said. "Sparks and the scraping noise, obviously the gear wasn't where it needed to be and we started sliding and it all happened so fast you really don't have time to get scared about it."

The Federal Aviation Administration will not be coming to the crash to investigate.

The airport is still open, but the runway is shut down until the plane can be removed.

The crash should be cleaned up sometime Monday afternoon.

Virginia State Police are releasing information about a weekend plane crash.

A plane ran off the runway early Sunday morning at the Blue Ridge Regional Airport in Henry County.

The plane's landing gear didn't come down as the plane was coming in for a landing, causing the crash.

The pilot and six other people were onboard. No one was hurt.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating Monday.
