RADFORD, Va. (AP) —
A federal agency is investigating whether drinking water was contaminated by the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
The Roanoke Times reported Friday that the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry will hear from residents at a public meeting Jan. 24.
Some residents have worried that the remnants of making ammunition that were dumped on the plant's sprawling grounds decades ago may have found their way into nearby wells.
Tests by U.S. and state environmental officials have found little evidence to support those claims.
A local environmental organization spurred the latest investigation.
The agency is an arm of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The results of its investigation will take a year.
