The number of background checks performed in Virginia are in.
Depending on your position on gun control, the numbers may or may not surprise you.
Background checks jumped nearly 50 percent between November 2011 and 2012, primarily because of President Obama's re-election.
If you think that increase was high, the number jumped nearly 80 percent between December 2011 and 2012, likely because of the gun control debate firing up after the shootings at Sandy Hook.
And statewide the number jumped by 100,000, almost 35 percent.
