Three volunteer firefighters were injured after a debris pile exploded during a high school bonfire in Marion, Virginia Thursday evening,
Authorities say students and supporters had gathered for the annual homecoming bonfire.
The firefighters who were there to assist with the bonfire were injured when the debris pile exploded.
Two of the firefighters were treated and released.
The third suffered what are believed to be first and second degree burns over approximately ten percent of his body and was flown to the burn center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
He's said to be in serious condition.
The Virginia State Police, Smyth County Sheriff’s Department, and Marion Police Department are investigating the incident.
