Update: Firefighters working propane leak

Update: 3:15pm Friday

Troutville Firefighters have cleared the scene of a propane tank leak at Southern States farm supply store on Route 11 in Botetourt County.

The Fire Chief tells WDBJ7 work was being done on the tank at 11:30 this morning when a valve malfunctioned and propane began leaking. 800 gallons in all spilled out.

Firefighters evacuated people from the store and residents living within a half mile radius were notified of what was going on, but those people were not evacuated.

Firefighters worked for two hours to contain the leak and secure the area.

Southern States is a farm supply store. Propane is sold for use in campers and grills, according to Troutville fire officials.

Firefighters are monitoring a leaking propane tank at the Southern States store on U. S. Route 11 in Botetourt County.

The store is located near the Botetourt County - Roanoke County line. 

Firefighters say the gas be slow to dissipate because of the weather.  As of 12:15 p.m. Friday there were no plans for any evacuations.
