There's a handful of tiny farms all around our viewing area.
Some of them actually grow what you might call a 'surprise garden.'
What makes them different is these small farms are part of a program called "CSA's" or "Community Supported Agriculture.'' You pay to join and each week, fresh foods are delivered to your hometown where you pick them up.
Getting to this farm in Floyd County was anything but easy. The land is down deep and it's rich. My dad used to call this type of terrain, "God's Country." This is where I found Tenley Weaver, co-owner of "Good Food Good People"- GFGP. "The first personal benefit is you get the cream of the crop and you get a committment from the grower to make sure you get a box full every week with the best crops that can be grown from many different growers in the area."
GFGP says it scours other Community Suppored Agriculture farms from as far away as 100 miles. Looking for the freshest crops, meats, eggs and herbs BUT you have to sign up in advance to be part of this club. Tenley said they need customers to keep the business going, "In order to sustain us and our effort the committment of our buyers who are now at this moment paying in and affording us money for seeds and fertilizer and labor, who is essentially banking our products for later on."
Kale and spinach are being grown inside this makeshift greenhouse that sits on a windy hill.
No fancy tools here, I saw shovels and a wheelbarrow and an outdoor shed with other tools that my mom sometimes used in her garden too.
Another greehouse is full of culinary herbs like rosemarie, oregano, and more.
David Dove is the other co-owner, "We can produce a crop with less insect problems and pretty much 10 months out of the year that allows us to have a fresh cops in the CSA box when it's offered."
There are 15 different drop sites in Blacksburg, Floyd and Roanoke. They deliver the best crops three days a week
And then there's Ollie, their Black Lab, who looked big and tough but did a lot of sitting around while his owners worked.

His enthusiasm for, and commitment to telling our story gave us a much needed boost in the cold days of February. Any news exposure for local farm products is precious, and we appreciate that Orlando spent the afternoon on the farm with us, and shared his experience with the local public. Thanks, Orlando!

I don't mean to disparage Orlie personally, I guess he tries hard, but he is not a very good local reporter. Biased and incompetence come to mind.
