A former Campbell County deputy is accused of rape and buying alcohol for a minor.

WDBJ7 has learned that Samuel Candler was indicted Monday on a rape charge, three charges of buying alcohol for a minor, and one count of using an animate object for sexual penetration.

According to Campbell County Sheriff Steve Hutcherson, the department was made aware of the allegations on February 3. Candler resigned from the department later that month.

Sheriff Hutcherson said his department conducted an administrative investigation, and Virginia State Police did a criminal investigation.

Candler was indicted Monday and arrested Tuesday. He is due back in court on November 13.

“I don’t think this one incident is representative of who we are as the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office or me as sheriff,” Hutcherson said. “We have a professional department.”
