It seems Irene isn't bringing any good news to the gas pump.
According to AAA, gas prices are already going up in the mid-Atlantic region in advance of the hurricane.
Northeast refiners and oil terminal operators in Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are implementing their emergency preparation plans.
In the worst case scenario, refiners would be forced to shut down and evacuate workers.
That could push pump prices even higher.
Some retailers from the Carolinas up the eastern seaboard are reporting some panic buying.
AAA is advising drivers to avoid that because it could drive up prices and lead to a gas shortage.
