Gleaning for the World passes half-billion mark in aid relief shipments

A local charity has reached a major milestone in its efforts to heal disaster victims.

Gleaning for the World, based in Appomattox County, has now shipped more than $500-million dollars worth of humanitarian aid.  It passed that mark with a load that went out Tuesday morning.

Gleaning collects relief items like food and water, and sends those supplies to disaster areas.

The non-profit was founded in 1998.  In 13 years Gleaning has grown to become a global organization, recently named the "Most Efficient Charity in America" by Forbes magazine.

"This year we shipped 62 tractor-trailer loads, worth about $40-million dollars," said Gleaning for the World President, Ron Davidson.  "Our goal in the next three years is to reach the point where we're handling $100-million dollars worth of supplies a year."

Tuesday's shipment is headed to Haiti.  Gleaning volunteers and supporters gathered to pray for the supplies before the items were sent off.
