It's one of those things that may take your breath away and it's something dozens of local bird watchers didn't want to miss.
On Wednesday, wildlife officials released a golden eagle back into the wild. A month ago it was caught in a coyote trap in Craig County. Vet's amputated the eagles third toe on its right foot. They say it will not be detrimental nor will it affect the eagles ability to hunt or perch.
"I would say this bird is extremely lucky to only be caught by one toe in a coyote trap. If you're going to be caught that's a good place to be caught I suppose," says Dr. Dave McRuer, the Centers Director of Veterinary Services.
The eagle was released from Harvey's Knob, an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway about 12 miles north of Roanoke.
Wildlife experts will be tracking it by GPS.
