Hands on instruction leads to real world honors

While some students have their nose in a book, some teens in Botetourt County are under the hood of a car.

Kids in Mr. Sale's class at Botetourt Technical Education Center are learning everything they need to know to repair cars.

But, their instruction goes outside the classroom.

For the last several years, students have been invited to an automotive conference in Las Vegas which is geared toward college grads and industry leaders.

BTEC is the only high school program invited.

Sale says it speaks to the work his kids put in everyday.

"The Gear Head girls was a seminar that my girls sat in and the first two women that sat down with them and had indepth conversations with them was Rose Kwasaki and Cami Edelbrock of Edelbrock Performance which I think is just great tribute to them," explains collision repair instructor Donnie Sale.

Sale says the conference shows his students what kind of careers are available in the industry and he plans on taking another class next year.
