Henrico ends prayer at Board of Supervisors meetings

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR)—

The invocation prayer at the Henrico Board of Supervisors meeting has been a tradition for 35 years. But on June 26, 2012, the Board dropped the opening prayer effective immediately.

County attorney Joseph Rapisarda said plans to drop the prayer were actually spurred by two recent complaints.

I feel that at government-sponsored events it is simply not fair to impose something like prayer on others. Americans are not required to believe in God. Religious Fundies simply don't get it. And the reality is, they probably never will. They think that a Christian MUST pray in restaurants. I wonder where THAT IS in the Bible? You don't HAVE TO pray out loud, especially since the Bible says "WHEN YOU PRAY, GO TO YOUR ROOM AND CLOSE THE DOOR." It also says not to be LIKE THE HYPOCRITES WHO LOVE TO STAND AND PRAY IN MARKET PLACES. Feel free. But it's not that different from smoking in a shared, public space. Others are forced to hear what you say.

At school board meetings, board of supervisor's meetings, graduations and the whole nine yards the Fundies simply HAVE TO begin with spoken prayer. And the deeper in Fundamentalist Christianity they are steeped, the more and more PUBLIC EVENTS they feel they have a RIGHT to pray openly at. These are the people who not only need to pray openly....they are the ones totally oblivious to non-Christians and non-believers. They MUST end everything "IN JESUS' NAME." Apparently God ONLY hears prayers that end that way in their limited understanding of the Bible. It's sad to me that these people truly think they have the right to impose THEIR prayers on everyone. Pray in Church or at home. Pray on the way.
