ROANOKE, Va.—
Roanoke’s most well known multi-cultural organization, Local Colors, is hosting its first “Hike for Haiti” fundraiser on June 18, 2011.After the devastating earthquake in 2010, the number of Haitian orphans has doubled. There are now approximately 1 million homeless and orphaned children in a country with a population of less than 10,000,000. The children need shelter, food, clothing, clean water and love.
All proceeds from Local Colors’ “Hike for Haiti” will support the development of an orphanage very close to Cape Haitian in Plain Du Nord. The community can show its support by hiking to the top of Mill Mountain on June 18.
Local Colors has teammed up with Dove Missions in its support of children of Haiti.
Registration begins at 9:00 am. Hikers and non-hikers will enjoy an authentic Haitian celebration at the top of the mountain. Traditional food and music is from10:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. at the Mill Mountain Star. Participants can register online here or visit the Local Colors office located inside the Jefferson Center in downtown Roanoke.
The price for individuals is $25, families - $60 and teams of 8 - $115.
