UPDATED: Man killed in Roanoke County house fire

UPDATED 3:00 p.m.: The fire killed 71-year-old John Wise.

Investigators say an electrical failure in an extension cord caused the fire.

A smoke detector woke a woman in the home up.

She then woke up Wise.

They both headed outside, but the man went back to get clothing.

When firefighters got there the man was unconscious.

Investigators say Wise died of smoke inhalation.

The woman was able to make it out. 

The fire caused $100,000 in damage.

One person was sent to the hospital after a house fire in Roanoke County Friday morning.

It happened around 1:20 a.m. in the 4000 block of Runnymeade Lane in the Oak Grove area of Cave Spring.  When fire crews arrived, smoke was coming from the house.  A woman was able to get out of the home without being harmed. 

Fire crews had to rescue a man. He was found unconscious inside the house.  According to a news release, "The man was transported to a local hospital suffering from potentially life threatening smoke inhalation."

Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.

Early Morning Fire Displaces One and Sends Another to the Hospital

June 24, 2011 (ROANOKE COUNTY)--Roanoke County Fire & Rescue was dispatched at 1:20 this morning to the 4000 block of Runnymeade Lane in the Oak Grove area of Cave Spring for a reported structure fire.

When firefighters first arrived at the single story brick ranch house, they found smoke showing from the front door.  A female occupant was out of the house, and reporting that a male occupant was still inside.  Firefighters immediately searched the home and found the unconscious man.  The man was transported to a local hospital suffering from potentially life threatening smoke inhalation. 

It took volunteer and career fire crews from the Cave Spring, Back Creek and Vinton stations about 20 minutes to get the flames under control.  There is significant fire, smoke and water damage to the basement of the house as well as smoke and heat damage to the first floor of the house.

There were three cats who lived in the home--two were found dead and the other was found hiding under a tree in the front yard.

The occupants will be displaced from their home and the woman is staying with family.

Fire Investigators are working to determine what caused this fire.
