A charity that's trying to feed hungry families is finding itself in need this Thanksgiving.

"Hunters for the Hungry" relies on donations of deer meat from hunters

Normally by the this time of year, the group would have already received more than 180,000 pounds of venison.

Right now they only have about 111,000.

The non-profit believes many hunters are facing hard times, and they're keeping deer meat that might otherwise be given away.

"Venison is such a quality food," said Laura Newell-Furniss, Director of Hunters for the Hungry.  "It's very lean and rich in protein.  It's exactly the kind of food that is needed by people who are living in poverty."

Hunters for the Hungry is accepting all types of deer meat, including venison that has already been packaged.
