Stuffed zucchini, banana pancakes and smoothies are some of the recipes kids have learned this summer at the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Virginia in Roanoke. The camp's goal was to teach kids how to eat more healthy.
Erika Turner says her favorite recipe was stuffed zucchini. She had never tried zucchini before and was surprised how good it is.
"I think it's just showing us a healthier way to eat instead of going out and getting fast food a lot," says Turner.
The 13-year-old is helping staff put together a cookbook for kids to take with them after camp ends this week. That will help them make their own snacks and dinner at home with their family.
On Wednesday, the older kids grilled pineapple and chicken wings. The younger children don't have to cook instead they just eat.
Wednesday's snack was different types of fruit with chocolate dip. Brenda McCray-Shifflett says the chocolate is an incentive for the children to eat all the fruit.
"At least they try different fruits and vegetables," says McCray-Shifflett, "That way instead of saying they don't like, try it and you might like it."
