Sunday marks the third anniversary of a high-profile murder that remains unsolved.
David Metzler and Heidi Childs died three years ago in a rural part of Montgomery County. The young couple was from Lynchburg and had just started fall classes at Virginia Tech.
Their bodies were found in a parking lot at Caldwell Fields, a campground along Craig Creek Road in the Jefferson National Forest. Both had been shot with bullets from a 30/30 rifle.
Friends say Metzler and Childs had only planned to stay at Caldwell Fields for a short time to talk and play guitars.
The site of the murder was empty Sunday, with no memorial or visible sign of the tragedy. A faded poster hangs nearby, reminding anyone with information to call the sheriff's office.
Investigators have made no arrests, but have said in earlier statements that they have DNA evidence of a possible suspect.
Deputies believe the killer was likely spotted driving to or from Caldwell Fields on the night of the murder. If you know anything about the case, you're asked to call a task force investigating the murders at (540) 382-6900.
