Lynchburg receives national recognition for downtown improvements

Lynchburg is getting national recognition for efforts to fix up an important part of town.

The city is receiving accreditation from the "National Trust Main Street Center."  The group recognizes cities for improving downtown areas.

Lynchburg's approach is all about getting more people to visit downtown, by holding events and festivals that encourage foot traffic.

Those efforts appear to be working.  Nearly a dozen new downtown restaurants have opened in the last two years, and city leaders are watching demand go up for downtown housing.

"The vision for the next ten years is to build on what's been happening," said Anna Bentson, Lynch's Landing Executive Director.  "To create that critical mass of businesses downtown, and also residents.  We've seen an increasing number of residents downtown and we really expect that to grow."

If you're looking for something to do in downtown Lynchburg Friday night, the city is hosting "Friday Cheers" at the riverfront until 9 p.m.
