A Lynchburg teacher's skill in the classroom has earned her a new ride to drive on the highway.

School leaders surprised Chelsey Dews with balloons Tuesday morning; a gesture to let her know she is Lynchburg's "Teacher of the Year."  Dews teaches fourth grade at Bedford Hills Elementary.

Dews has worked at Bedford Hills since she graduated from college 13 years ago.  Her goal as a teacher is to let students have fun while they learn.

"I get up and I come to school in the morning, just for the kids," Dews said Tuesday.  "13 years ago I had no idea I would be in this situation, where I can impact so many kids every single day."

Dews will now go on to a regional "Teacher of the Year" competition.  She'll be formally honored by her school system at a banquet May 24.
