A group that helps Lynchburg kids succeed is saying thanks to community leaders.
The "SHOPO" foundation for youth held its first annual awards dinner Wednesday. SHOPO stands for "Self Help Obtaining Positive Opportunities."
The organization was started by B.B. Shavers, a former star athlete at E-C Glass High School who spent 20 years in prison for drug crimes. He's now working to give kids positive activities that will keep them out of trouble and help them go to college.
SHOPO offers a wide variety of opportunities for youth, including an annual football camp, Easter egg hunt, and tours of nearby college campuses. All activities are offered for free to anyone who wishes to attend.
Various leaders from the Lynchburg area were recognized at Wednesday's banquet, including WDBJ-7's Tim Saunders, who received a "Newsman of the Year" award.
