A man is accused of assaulting a teenage girl in an alley in Roanoke.
The 15-year-old told police she was walking on Mountain Avenue around 6:30 Monday night when the man pulled her into that alley.
An officer actually heard her screams and ran to help. That's when her attacker ran off, throwing down a knife as he ran.
Police eventually caught and arrested Jamelle Banks. The girl was not hurt.
Here's the full press released from the Roanoke Police Department:
The Roanoke Police Department has made an arrest in an incident where a 15
year old female was assaulted in the alley of the 500 block of Mountain
Avenue SW. On Monday, November 12, 2012, at 6:33pm, Sgt. J. W. Hicks heard
the scream of a female coming from the alley south of Mountain Avenue while
he was investigating an unrelated matter in the 500 block of Mountain
Avenue. As Sgt. Hicks approached on foot to investigate, he observed
Jamelle Andre Banks, age 24 of Roanoke, run from the direction of the
screams, crossing Mountain Avenue. Sgt. Hicks ordered Banks to stop, but
Banks fled on foot, and discarded a knife as he ran. Banks was stopped in
the 400 block of Elm Avenue SW by Sergeant Hicks, and assisting officers.
The female victim advised she had been approached by Banks while walking,
and was forcibly taken into the alley from 5th Street. The female victim
was assaulted, but was not injured in the incident. Roanoke Police
Detectives responded and assisted in the investigation. Police K-9 assisted
in a search of the area for additional evidence. Banks was taken to the
Roanoke City Jail and charged with Abduction and Aggravated Sexual Battery.
The investigation is on-going.
