A Martinsville woman will spend 25 years in prison for her role in the slaying of former Henry County Republican Party chairman Donald Lawson.

A judge sentenced 25-year-old Amanda Alexander after she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, robbery and other charges.

Kenneth Smith agreed to a plea deal on July 20 for his part in Lawson's death. He was sentenced to life in prison.

A man charged with the murder of a Martinsville man has pleaded guilty.

Kenneth Smith agreed to a plea deal on July 20 for the death of Donald Lawson.

Lawson was a well-known political leader in Martinsville. A neighbor found Lawson dead inside of his home on May 25, 2011. An autopsy showed Lawson was hit in the head with a heavy object

After Lawson's body was found, investigators determined that his van was missing. Smith and Amanda Alexander were later found with Lawson's van in Henrico County, and charged in connection to Lawson's death. Smith is Donald Lawson's former stepson.

As part of the plea agreement, Smith will be sentenced to life in prison.

As for Alexander, she is set to stand trial on Oct. 9. She will not get the death penalty, but prosecutors are seeking life in prison for her.
