Danville is making way for a new fire station amid talks of closing another.
Construction could begin this summer on a new 911 center, fire department headquarters and training facility.
This week construction workers are clearing buildings from an old lumber yard on Lynn Street for the facility.
Last week city council mentioned closing an existing station to save money in the face of a huge budget shortfall.
But after hearing from the city's fire chief, that's not an option.
"It's going to cut the service we're able to provide, it will cut the speed, the time response that we have," said Danville Fire Chief David Eagle. "I don't think there's anyone who I've heard that is in support of that."
Their current location is 86-years-old and firefighters are quickly running out of space.
The final design of the new building isn't finished.
