BLACKSBURG, Va.—
A pedestrian crossing in Blacksburg is safer, thanks to cutting edge technology.A crossing point along Prices Fork Road is equipped with sensors that detect when a person is about to cross the road.
When someone nears the edge of the sidewalk, signal lights alert traffic to slow.
A representative from the company that installed it, Traficon, came to check on its system.
"Students walk up to the crossway and they have books in their hands or people that are physically impaired, don't have the ability to push the push button, so there's a number of reasons. So what we do is activate the button virtually," said Jim Lampe, Regional Manager of Treficon.
Traficon has been selling these systems in Europe for years, and now they're more popular in the US.
The town of Blacksburg and a citizen group contacted the company to install the system.
