People in Roanoke County and Salem celebrate National Dance Day

Did you dance today?  You still have time.

It's National Dance Day, and people in our area came out to celebrate.

In Roanoke County, dance instructors at Gold's Gym got a lot of people moving in an enormous Zumba class.

Zumba is a type of dance fitness.

Sara Bremer, one of the instructors, says she's seen the popularity of dance explode in Roanoke recently.

"We are just celebrating dance," she says.  "I think a lot of people almost have a fear of dance as adults.  It's something a lot of people do freely as children.  But through programs like Just Dance Roanoke and Zumba fitness, it brings everyone together - all different ages, shapes, sizes to find fitness and dance in a really fun way."

Just Dance Roanoke also invited people to show off more of their moves at Corned Beef and Company in downtown Roanoke earlier this evening.

People also showed up at Miss Mona's School of Dance in Salem to get down.

Instructors taught two different routines at free dance lessons.

It was the first time the school has done anything like this but they hope to have more in the future.

The message?  Just get out there and move!

Traci Addison, the assitant director at the school, says, "It can be at a studio such as ours or it can be in your basement or bedroom or with friends. It's just really important for everyone to get off the couch and move for your heart health and overall wellness."

Donations were also raised for a dance studio that was completely leveled by the tornado in Joplin, Missouri.
