Lawyers for the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors asked a judge Thursday to throw out a lawsuit over prayers offered at board meetings.

The American Civil Liberties Union and a county resident, who's identity has not been made public, sued the board for conducting what it described as overtly Christian prayers before each meeting.

In a news release Thursday, the board's lawyer, William Stanley, said the lawsuit it without merit.  "This suit is just  another attempt by the ACLU and anti-First Amendment groups to remove any reference to God from public forums," Stanley wrote.

The board also asked the court to reveal the defendant's identity.
