The Roanoke Police Department has identified the man who they say killed a woman before killing himself.
Investigators say 54-year-old Reginald Smith of Roanoke killed 53-year-old Rebecca Dennis on Thursday in Roanoke.
When police arrived at the Salem Avenue home, Smith began stabbing himself with a box cutter. He died after being taken to the hospital.

A woman killed in a murder-suicide Thursday in Roanoke has been identified by the Roanoke Police Department.
53-year-old Rebecca Marie Dennis of Roanoke was found dead inside of a home in the 1600 block of Salem Avenue.
Police say she was killed by a man, who later took his own life. He has not been identified by police.
Dennis was found inside of a bedroom with several cuts and a belt around her neck.
Police were called to the home because family members said Dennis had not been opening her door, and she was in a past abusive relationship.
When officers got into the home, they found Dennis’ body and a man inside with a box cutter. The man began stabbing himself with a box cutter, investigators say.
He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. Dennis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the incident was domestic in nature.

Police are investigating a murder-suicide in Roanoke.
A spokesperson told WDBJ7 that a man stabbed a woman in the 1600 block of Salem Avenue around 5:30 p.m.
When they arrived on scene the woman was laying inside the house, and the man was inside of a bathroom with a box cutter.
After a short standoff, the man put the weapon down and was taken to the hospital with self-inflicted injuries.
He died at the hospital.
Police are not saying if the two are related, and no names have been released.
