To prevent your pipes from freezing at home, experts with the Western Virginia Water Authority suggest letting your faucet drip during extreme cold weather.
This can prevent the pipes from bursting.
Dripping faucet's will waste water, so some suggest using a bucket to save the water.
You can reuse the water to give your pet to drink, wash your face or brush your teeth, or even fill your coffee pot in the morning.
Letting your faucet drip should only be used on pipes that are vulnerable to freezing. Usually pipes that are in an unprotected space or unheated.
Sarah Baumgarner, environmental communications coordinator for the Western Virginia Water Authority, says it's a good idea to turn find your main water valve. "If you have a main water break, you can locate that valve, usually located in the basement or laundry room, that will cut the water off that comes into your home. So, if a line should break, you can turn off the water to minimize damage in your house," said Baumgardner.
Baumgardner also suggest opening the cabinet doors under the sink to allow heat from your home to get around the pipes and insulate outside faucets.
