Protesters take aim at predatory lending in Danville

Some people in Danville are fighting to put an end to payday loans with interest rates as much as 360 percent.

Protesters stood outside Advance America loan service this afternoon to show their support of legislation to end predatory lending in Virginia.

They're recommending lawmakers cap interest rates at 36 percent, close loopholes on current laws and encourage local banks to create small loan programs.

"Predatory lenders are taking an even bigger bite out of out economics than we can stand," said Mary Massie Barnes holding up a sign in protest in front of Advance America.

A spokesperson for Advance America told WDBJ7 the protest is an insult to the business and degrading to their customers.

The company says it has received very little complaints from customers about loans and payment plans.
