PULASKI CO., Va.—
The Pulaski Police Department wants dog owners to be aware of a distemper outbreak in the county.Distemper is a virus that kills nearly half of all adult dogs, and 80 percent of puppies, the department says.
There have been several confirmed cases of canine distemper in Pulaski County which officials believe is coming from raccoons.
Symptoms include high fever, coughing and vomiting.
Officials urge dog owners to have their dogs vaccinated.
On March 10 and March 24 the Pulaski County Animal Shelter will be giving out distemper shots for $5.
Rabies vaccinations ($5) and kennel cough ($10) will also be given out.

Pulaski Police Department would like to warn the public of an outbreak of distemper, threatening the lives of dogs in our county. Distemper is a highly contagious airborne virus that kills nearly 50% of adult dogs, and 80% of puppies. There have been several confirmed cases of canine distemper in Pulaski County. It is believed that this outbreak is possibly coming from infected raccoons. The symptoms include high fever, coughing, and vomiting. If your pet has these symptoms, it is recommended to have it checked out by a veterinarian. However, the only way to protect your dog is to have its vaccinations. On March 10th and March 24th, between noon and 4 p.m. the Pulaski County Animal Shelter will be hosting Rocky’s Clinic, where distemper shots will be offered for only $5, rabies vaccinations for $5, (required by state law), and bordatella (kennel cough) for $10. Animal Control will be present, selling county dog tags, which is required by law. Appointments for these vaccinations are preferred, but they will also accept walk-ins.
