Retired Firefighter saves Franklin County family from house fire

An unknown man is credited for saving a Franklin County family from a house fire.

It happened around 5:30 Sunday morning on Crafty Fox Drive in Rocky Mount.

The family says the fire started in a storage area and then spread to the house.

They say they woke up to a man yelling, and beating on the door, telling them to get out.

That man is a complete stranger who was driving by when he saw something unusual.

"We have no idea who they were, he used to be a firefighter and thats all we know. He said he was coming down Route 220 and seen the flickering light from the road, so he came up here to check it out," the family said.

That man is a retired firefighter.

The family says he gave them some money and then left.

Red Cross volunteers are providing the family with food, clothing and shelter.
