Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries Friday night, after a Roanoke apartment building caught fire. The fire caused heavy damage to the building, and forced the relocation of other residents.
Roanoke firefiighters responded to the 2600 block of Westover Avenue shortly before 10:30 PM. They found heavy fire coming from the rear of the building on the third floor .
Roanoke Fire EMS Chief David Hoback said firefighters found one person on the third floor. He said that person was taken to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation. Hoback said a second victim opened the door to the apartment that was on fire and suffered minor facial burns and smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.
The fire displaced other residents of the building. Hoback said the Red Cross was responding to help arrange temporary shelter. It's unclear how many people live in the apartment building, but Hoback said it appeared to have at least 12 units.
Hoback said firefighters had not determined the cause. He expected investigators to remain at the building for most of the night.
