ROANOKE CO.,Va.—
When schools close because of snow, parents have to scramble to find child care, but Roanoke County has an answer. The County's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism offers snow day camps at the Green Ridge Recreation Center and the Brambleton Center. The activities for school-aged children range from arts and crafts to swimming .
Scott Ramsburg is a spokesman for the department. "Usually, we find the first snow day or two it's pretty low numbers, a few kids, but it builds as the school year progresses if we have a lot of snow, because frankly the parents can't afford all the time off from work and need something to do with the kids," he said.
The snow day camps run from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. So far this year, neither program has been full, so both have more room for children who need a place to play on a snowy day.
