Roanoke gets its first downtown grocery store

The Star City is one step closer to competing with its metropolitian counterparts.

S & W Market had its grand opening Saturday morning.

The specialty grocery store gives downtown residents one more reason to keep their cars parked and stay downtown.

The store on Church Avenue at 16 West Marketplace will have grab and go sandwiches, a deli counter, an extensive cheese-selection and alcohol all in walking distance for many city residents.

Co-owner Mark Linson thinks the store's timing couldn't be better, "I think it's really integral to the growth of downtown community providing services like these to not only keep people from having to make that drive, but also cutting back on that fuel impact -our carbon impact."

Adds co-owner Amelia Glaser, "I think there's a concern about prices, that we're a little overpriced. There are certain items as in a specialty shop, specialty grocery store, that are going to be a little more expensive, so you treat yourself once in a while."

The owners say they tried to standardize prices on more common items like produce, milk and dairy.
