You may call him motivated while others may call him downright crazy.

What started as a New Year's resolution last year, ended on Sunday when a Roanoke man completed a 52-mile run within a matter of hours.

Mark Hammer took part in the challenge as a way to spread awareness about Type II diabetes.

Several of his family members suffered with the disease.

“So today is the culmination of a year-long journey. I'm doing the break out of diabetes challenge. So it says break out of diabetes here and every weekend I've done an additional mile. So the first weekend in January, I ran one mile. The second weekend I ran two,” he said.

And, being the 52nd, and last, week of the year Mark finished an incredible 52-mile run Sunday around 5:30 p.m.

As for his future?

He's planning another running challenge for next year and he says he may even write a book.
