Folks from our area are travelling to the nation's capital to witness the inauguration first hand. One local civil rights leader is experiencing what some call a once in a lifetime opportunity - for the second time.
Brenda Hale is president of the Roanoke National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She left midday Saturday.
“I cannot tell you. It is priceless. And I am so honored to have been blessed with two tickets to see the inauguration,” said Hale.
We also spoke with Bishop Edward Mitchell of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. “Monday is going to be an awesome Monday-- for everybody to remember these two men. (They’re) being celebrated at the same time--in different places but for the same cause,” he said.
Civil rights leaders say now is a time to reflect on, and address key issues affecting our nation like the economy and gun control.
