The Roanoke Police Department announced on Monday that police dog, Oskar, died.

Oskar was a 5-year-old German Shepherd who joined the department in August 2010. He worked with Officer T.A. Barber in narcotics detection, tracking, and criminal apprehension. Oskar worked on the K-9 unit for two years.

During Oskar’s career, he recovered 70 pound of marijuana, 44 grams of cocaine, 26 ecstasy pills, and a handgun thrown by a suspect.

His partner tells us Oskar died after a foreign body like a splinter punctured his colon.

He had been ill a few times in the past; this time he lost energy late last week and died a few days later.
