"This celebration is a thank you.  We started out on Salem Avenue in 1948 in one room.  We made the same soup from market leftovers every night and housed anybody who needed a place to stay for the night," explains Kara Shields, General Manager of 2nd Helpings.

Throughout the store there are notes reminding customers that money spent in "2nd helpings" - will feed, cloth and house someone who's down on their luck.

The mission says single men used to be its largest clientele, but in recent years- it's serving more women and children.
