New and successful math teachers could get bonuses from the Roanoke school division. The plan was approved by the city school board Thursday.
Under the plan, new, qualified math teachers with a successful track record could get up to a $10,000 signing bonus. Current teachers who have a record of exceeding state standards could get bonuses of up to $1,000. The program will cost a total of $500,000 and expire after three years, unless it is renewed by the school board.
Of the math teachers who left the division over past three years, 28 percent took jobs with other school systems. A school division spokesman said the incentive program won't apply to elementary school teachers. The school division does not have trouble attracting teachers for that level, Justin McLeod told WDBJ7.
