Roanoke Valley Horse Show heats up in Salem

Hoses, fans and plenty of water are all things that are in high demand with the high temperatures at the Roanoke Valley Horse Show.

With the temperatures climbing into the mid 90's add the heat index and it feels like it's well over 100 degrees.

Riders were busy Wednesday giving their horses plenty of water and making sure they were hydrated.

A veterinarian with Virginia Tech says riders should make sure their horses get cooled down after being shown

“If there's any way you can get into the shade and keep your horse from being out in the sun for as much as possible. Cool them down afterwards, so walking them, getting the blankets off, icing them down, giving them a nice ice bath and then making sure they have water available after they're shown,” said Horse Show veterinarian, Dr. Jennifer Larson.

She also said that riders should be aware of the symptoms that could lead to a heat-related illness, including colic.

The Roanoke Valley Horse Show continues in Salem through Saturday.
