The city of Salem and WDBJ7 made a special announcement today. The two will partner to present the Roy Stanley Memorial Shootout next month at the Salem Civic Center in honor of the late NEWS7 sportscaster.
"He stood for everything that was good about athletics," said WDBJ7 General Manager Jeff Marks. "He stood for everything that was positive about community and he stood for what we believe in at WDBJ7, which is hometown."
The one day basketball event, held on February 4th, will build on the Member One Shootout that the Kiwanis Club has showcased for several years.
"To work with such a great organization as the Roy Stanley will help to let more people know about what we do and help their group as well," Salem Kiwanis President Brenda Giles added. "It is really a great situation."
Comcast is on board as the title sponsor, and some of the proceeds from the eight-team tournament will benefit the Roy Stanley Memorial Scholarship fund. The fund has awarded 50 scholarships since 2002.
"To think that there is an organization that is willing to associate with him and maybe jog some of the memories of those who may have forgotten him and then those folks who didn't know him," Stanley's sister, Rhonda Rogers, expressed. "Get to know a little more about him and that legacy that he has left behind, which is to provide an opportunity for our young people to be educated."
