ROANOKE, Va.
There were lots of celebrations to go around this Saturday.Today is National Adoption Day- a day when thousands of adoptions are finalized across the country and new families are formed. While in a courtroom in Salem, we witnessed smiles, tears and a lot of anticipation as families began a new chapter of their lives.
Billy and Kelly Smith already adopted twin boys Jake and Zack two years ago. And on this National Adoption Day they adopted two girls; 6-month-old Karlee and 2-year-old Maddie.
“This is just something we've wanted for a long time and our dream has finally come true to have children in our home,” said Kelly Smith, who was brought to tears.
The feeling of anticipation in the courtroom was amazing as families waited for the judge to sign life changing papers.
“To come home and to have five children pile on top of you and welcome you home is the greatest feeling in the world,” said Billy Smith.
We asked Kelly Smith why she was so emotional. “Just to be able to in a way give back to our community--just love these kids --offer support to them bring them into our family. They're just one of us now,” she said
There are more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find a permanent home.
